Net worth calculator
Add up what you own, take away what you owe. What's left is your net worth.
Can net worth be negative?
Yes. It means you owe more than you own today, and that is common early on.
How does my net worth compare with other households?
Blooom sets your figure beside the middle UK household of your age, from ONS figures for April 2020 to March 2022. Those figures are for whole households and include pensions, so add your partner's money too for a fair comparison.
Keep this number up to date
Blooom holds it for you, adds every account as it changes, and shows what your savings could earn.
How it works
Cash, investments, pensions, your home at today's value, your car and anything else worth money.
What's left on your mortgage, car finance, cards and loans.
Your net worth, and how it sits beside households your age.
How to work out your net worth
Net worth is one subtraction, and you can do it on paper in about ten minutes.
- List what you own. Write down cash, savings, investments and pensions at today's value, then your home at what it would sell for and your car at a sensible figure.
- List what you owe. Add the mortgage balance still outstanding, car finance, credit cards, overdrafts and loans.
- Subtract. Take the total you owe from the total you own. A result below zero is common early on and means you owe more than you own today.
- Date it. Write today's date beside the figure. The number matters less than how it sits against the same figure a few months from now.
- Do it again. Check monthly or quarterly rather than daily, because markets and house prices move for reasons unrelated to you.
A worked example
Alex, our example household, has £11,000 in savings and current accounts, £12,600 in investments, £25,000 in pensions, a home worth £331,400, and a car and other things worth £11,500. Alex owes £236,200 on the mortgage and £5,950 on credit cards and loans.
Alex owns £391,500 and owes £242,150, so Alex's net worth is £149,350.
Alex is an illustrative example, not a real person and not a typical UK household.
Questions
How do I calculate my net worth?
Add up everything you own: savings, current accounts, investments, pensions and your home. Take away everything you owe: your mortgage, credit cards, loans and car finance. What's left is your net worth, and it can be below zero.
What is net worth?
Everything you own minus everything you owe. It can be below zero, and that is common early on.
Should I include my pension?
Yes. The ONS counts private pensions in household wealth, so include yours to compare like for like.
Should I count my student loan?
It is a debt, but you only repay it above an earnings threshold and it is written off after a set time. Many people leave it out. Add it under anything else if you prefer.
What value should I use for my home?
What it would sell for today, not what you paid. The House Price Index for your area is a fair guide.
