Tax wrappers, in plain English
Updated
A 'tax wrapper' is a way of holding money that changes how it's taxed. Same investment, different wrapper, different tax outcome. Here are the main UK ones at a conceptual level.
ISAs
An ISA shelters interest and investment growth from tax. The ISA limit is £20,000 each tax year across ISA types, and nothing inside is taxed.
Pensions
A pension gives you tax relief going in (the government tops up contributions at your tax rate) and grows tax-free, in exchange for locking the money away until retirement age. Employer contributions are extra money on top.
Lifetime ISA (LISA)
A adds a 25% government bonus for a first home or retirement, within its own rules (ages 18–39 to open, withdrawal penalties otherwise).
Salary sacrifice & marriage allowance
Salary sacrifice swaps some salary for a pension contribution (or other benefit) before National Insurance is taken, which can lower the NI you pay. lets a lower-earning spouse transfer part of their personal allowance to a basic-rate partner. Both are about using allowances you're entitled to.
These are general explanations of how the wrappers work, not personal tax advice. Your own position depends on your circumstances.
